All You Need to Know About 8th Grade US History

Syllabus: Schedule

COURSE OVERVIEW

“In this course, students will view American history through the lens of people who were trying--and are still trying--to fulfill the promise of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. In this class, students will confront themes of freedom, equality, and liberty and their changing definition over time. This course will explore the geography of place, movement, and region, starting with the Atlantic seaboard, and the American westward expansion and the economic development, the Civil War and finally Reconstruction.” (CA History-Social Science Framework)

Unit 1 | Our Colonial Heritage
Unit 2 | Revolution in the Colonies
Unit 3 | Forming a New Nation
Unit 4 | Launching the New Republic
Unit 5 | Expanding Nation
Unit 6 | America in the mid-1800’s
Unit 7 | Union Challenged

 MATERIALS REQUIRED DAILY

  • Chromebook (Charged)

  • Writing Utensil (pen/pencil)

  • Paper or notebook

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

  • Choose a distraction-free work space       

  • Attend Zoom meetings on time

  • Come prepared to each meeting

  • If you have questions, attend office hours 

  • Think before posting

  • Be respectful to classmates

LATE WORK POLICY

Assignment due dates will be posted on Google Classroom. Students will be responsible for keeping track of their assignments in their planners. 


Any assignment turned in past the due date will be reduced by 10% for each extra day. Additionally, a student should notify me (through email or in office hours) of any assignment that was turned in late to ensure it is graded.


Students who have a valid reason and require an extension on an assignment must communicate this to me in order to receive an extension on an assignment.

GRADING

Students will receive one grade that is based on a combination of assessments (tests, quizzes, papers, projects), in-class assignments and homework. Students will be graded on an A-F scale. Grades will be available to check on Illuminate.

PHONE POLICY

In order to best accommodate online learning, students will be allowed to use phones to participate in class sessions. However, students should refrain from using phones for non-academic uses during class time.

ACADEMIC HONESTY/PLAGIARISM

Academic honesty is an essential part of education, as it requires students to demonstrate honesty and integrity in all their work. Therefore, students should do all their own work, and not steal or copy another person’s work without giving proper credit.
